How Internships are Changing in the Face of COVID-19

Micro-internships Provide Opportunity for Northeast Indiana Students, Employers

Just like the rest of the world, the workplace and internship opportunities are changing drastically in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Internships are no longer 12 to 16 weeks of working in an office focused on a variety of projects during the summer. Today, internships are a mix of in-person and virtual work, and companies are working overtime to engage interns.

A study done by Battelle Technology Partnership Practice reported that one work experience opportunity increases a student’s likelihood of living in Indiana after graduation to 58 percent. Four work experience opportunities increase that likelihood to 75 percent.

So, with a lot on the line for both interns and employers, it’s no surprise we are seeing innovation in internship trends, including micro-internships.

According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), “micro-internships are project-based opportunities that are a high priority for companies, but they don't have the time or the staff to get them done. They're short-term, low-risk but time-intensive."

Unlike traditional internships, micro-internships take place over a range of hours as opposed to a set timeframe. They typically last from 10 to 80 hours of work with most projects due within a week to a month after assignment. Their short timeframes make micro-internships a great fit for this year’s extended winter break. Students could complete multiple micro-internships during the break between semesters. Employers can use the experience to test out interns for either a potential long-term internship or a full-time hire.

Employers in Indiana are encouraged to consider and promote micro-internship opportunities.
