Mural Fest Mentee - Jade Kelsey
Meet the Mentees - Jade Kelsey
Why did you decide to participate in Make It Your Own Mural Fest?
I saw this festival as the perfect opportunity to reconnect with my community. I volunteer a lot for a variety of local events. All of my 'normal' activities have been canceled or moved to a virtual event.
What do you want to learn in the mentorship program?
My journey as an artist is only a few years old. I love trying new things and challenging myself to learn and grow in my work. There aren't a lot of opportunities to learn how to install a large scale piece, so when I saw what was being offered, I jumped at the chance.
Why is public art important for the community?
I think it gives the community a point of pride, and a piece of identity. I love being surprised by art in unexpected places, like a piece of treasure that we all get to share.
Mural Fest is named after Northeast Indiana's Make It Your Own brand. What does "make it your own" mean to you?
To me, it means that we get to put our personality, our talent and our creativity out into the community for everyone to see and benefit from. It shines a light on all of these communities and encourages folks to travel around to see all of the great work that this festival has brought to life.
What are the best aspects of Northeast Indiana's art scene?
The best part about our local art is the variety, and a supportive, inclusive community. This festival is the perfect example of that, we see variety in the artists' background, style and vision as well as a variety of locations and projects.
What else should we know about you?
I have a wide variety of artistic interests, including calligraphy, watercolor, sign painting, chalk art and nearly everything in between.
Make It Your Own Mural Fest worked with 11 muralists from around the country to install murals in Northeast Indiana's 11 counties. Want to learn more about the Mural Fest artists?Click here
