Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership Hiring Summer Interns

For students and employers alike, March means spring break is on the horizon. We’re dreaming of sunshine, beaches, sleeping in and a break from school. Vacation, here we come!

For those coordinating summer internships, however, March is full of planning and preparing. There’s a buzz in the air. With the excitement there’s also a little bit of anxiety, as this is the time to finalize job descriptions, schedule interviews, finish project plans, hire interns and set up desks.

As you can tell, here at the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, we take internships seriously.

A study done by Battelle Technology Partnership Practice reported that one work experience opportunity increases a student’s likelihood of living in Indiana after graduation to 58 percent. Four work experience opportunities increases that likelihood to 75 percent.

In Northeast Indiana, it’s important to understand that we’re competing for talent against coastal cities like popular spring break destinations.

Simply hosting an intern isn’t enough to increase the likelihood of an Indiana graduate to stay here, and it’s not raising employee engagement within the region. So, we don’t just host interns; we aim to exceed all expectations by providing high-quality internships.

Internships assist in our talent development and talent attraction efforts, but even more than that, internships give our team members the opportunity to become more engaged in their jobs, try out a new management role, and experience working with individuals on other teams.

Having internships at the Regional Partnership not only means that we get to provide students with real work experiences, we also get to challenge our staff.

We asked our 2017 interns what they would say to others if they were considering applying for an internship at the Regional Partnership.

Jonathan Zhou, 2017 summer intern from Canterbury High School

“The team made it clear from Day 1 that we (interns) were very welcome in the office. My advisers were always accessible whenever I had a question and willing to point me in the right direction. I was impressed by the support I received from the people I worked with. If you’re looking for a cohesive group of people that are willing to involve you in their work to improve your own community, I highly recommend applying for an internship with the Regional Partnership,” said Zhou.

Rachel Stephens, 2017 summer and fall intern from Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne

“Interning at the Regional Partnership means being included in a variety of projects which allow you to apply concepts from the classroom into a professional setting. This provides a perfect opportunity to develop skills and discover passions. And if all that were not enough, interning here is just plain fun. Team building, strengths coaching and social hours are all on the agenda. The Regional Partnership has a culture of open collaboration and intentional investment in their employees,” said Stephens. Today, Stephens works as an administrative assistant at the Noble County Economic Development Corporation.

Klay Fullenkamp, 2017 summer intern from Wabash College

“From day one to my last day, I was treated in a first-class manner and that is a testament to the culture in which the employees have created and bought into themselves. I felt like any other employee that came to work every day rather than just an intern. Another valuable asset to the Partnership is strengths coaching. Prior to my internship, I completed the Gallup’s StrengthsFinder Assessment. Once I began my internship, I received strengths coaching every Friday. I now find it much easier to describe myself and understand even more how to sell myself on the assets and skills I possess to future employers,” said Fullenkamp. Today, Fullenkamp is approaching graduation and looking for new opportunities.

While spring break may be on the minds of potential interns, we hope they’ll consider a summer of sunny days and awesome project opportunities with the Regional Partnership. We’re eager to get to know talented students, and engage them in our culture, community, and projects.
