ELA Members Learn from Business Leaders During Book Club

As a group of young leaders dedicated to creating opportunities for action, growth and regional pride, individual development is important to the Emerging Leaders Alliance (ELA). After all, what better way to develop a better region than intentional betterment of its future leaders?

The ELA hosts a book club twice each year and invites influential community leaders to serve as panelists. In March, the ELA read Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.

The Seven Habits

In order to become the most effective leader and person, Covey argues that his readers should practice these seven habits:

  1. Be proactive
  2. Begin with the end in mind
  3. Put first things first
  4. Think win-win
  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the saw

While Covey acknowledges that no human can practice each habit to perfection all of the time, these are behaviors we should strive for in order to be the best versions of ourselves.

Meet the Panelist

AWS Foundation CEO Patti Hays and 3Rivers Federal Credit Union Performance Improvement Manager Chris Runyan shared their perspective on this book as panelists.

The evening started with Patti and Chris immediately opening up to the group. By offering stories and examples of how the book influenced their lives both personally and professionally, the panelists set the tone for open and honest discussion.

Diving deep into each of the habits, ELA members could not write fast enough to take note of all the wisdom these panelists had to offer.

Specifically, Chris encouraged members to identify their principles and use them as a guiding compass in decision making and how they treat others.

“Your behavior defines you,” Chris told the ELA as he explained that a person’s actions are a reflection of their principles.

Patti offered that the young people in the room should be confident in their skills, ideas and even their failures. She encouraged the group to see failing as learning opportunity. Rather than letting failure or disappointment shake their self-worth, Patti inspired and said, “Know your capital and ask for new opportunities.”

Putting Ideas into Action

After such an encouraging and uplifting discussion, the ELA is determined to live out the book’s advice at work, home and in the community.   

“My effectiveness was limited by my circle of influence. With tips from the book, I have been able to expand my circle of influence, while creating functional teams. Understanding that my effectiveness was dependent on working with others was the first step to becoming more effective,” said ELA member Morgan Miller.

The group will continue their pursuit of personal development with their next study on John C. Maxwell’s “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”.
