Northeast Indiana is committed to meeting the challenges of the future through higher education. The 18 colleges and universities in our region are renowned for their outreach to military veterans. Many universities, such as Purdue University Fort Wayne and Trine University in Angola, have military veteran student services offices affiliated with the Yellow Ribbon Program to assist veterans on how to fully utilize the benefits of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

For military veterans who are interested in a quicker route back into the workforce, Ivy Tech offers paths for transfer of certifications earned in the service. Ivy Tech’s Veterans Services Office can explain how the Certification Crosswalk program works and how to most easily and efficiently use the skills you learned and earned in the military to find the perfect job.

1.) You are not alone.

Hundreds of veterans are utilizing the benefits of the GI Bill at one of Northeast Indiana’s 18 colleges and universities. The veteran student services offices at these schools will answer all your questions about topics such as missing class for a deployment, transferring military training into college credits, and the availability of supplemental financial assistance through service in the Indiana National Guard.

2.) You don’t have to wait four years to start working.

If a four-year degree is not part of your plans, Northeast Indiana offers numerous certification programs that will quickly put to work the skills learned in the military. Ivy Tech has nearly a dozen campuses spread across Northeast Indiana, and the certificate programs they offer include paramedic science (EMT), machine tool technology, cyber security, homeland security/public safety, and aviation maintenance technology, among others. The Military Services division of the Career Center at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne also offers assistance in transferring military experience into a job. The Career Center offers help with resume preparation and writing, as well as work placement. Most military veterans have experience and skills that can be put toward earning job-ready certificates.

3.) Our colleges and universities offer ways to stay active and in shape.

Many of Northeast Indiana’s 18 colleges and universities, such as Purdue University Fort Wayne, Trine University, and Huntington University, offer state-of-the-art health and fitness facilities, as well as club and intramural sports. Fitness is especially important for veterans who plan to continue their service in the Indiana National Guard.

4.) Local employers love local students.

Local employers and recruiters are committed to hiring the best students at Northeast Indiana’s colleges and universities. Some employers even offer employer-led certification programs that take advantage of the GI Bill. It's also common for area veterans to work part-time and full-time while attending school, and Northeast Indiana universities have local resources available to help veterans find accommodating jobs or education programs. The military veteran's offices at every college and university will work with the career offices to make sure you are aware of the right job opportunities. 

5.) Our low cost of living is perfect for veterans going back to school.
