Meet the Companies Making Their Mark on High-Tech Manufacturing
Awarded two contracts from the U.S. Department of Defense, L3 Harris added a 45,000-square-foot expansion to their Fort Wayne manufacturing plant. The company will use the state-of-the-art facility to develop a prototype that tracks and intercepts data from hypersonic and ballistic missiles and satellite prototypes. To meet the nation’s evolving threats and keep up with the latest technology, L3 Harris has invested $50 million in its Fort Wayne missile programs.
Their Fort Wayne manufacturing plant is situated about 225 miles from six of the top 15 engineering schools in the nation. As the company looks to hire more highly trained workers in the coming years, L3 Harris is perfectly situated with access to a solid talent base in the Midwest.
Churubusco-based manufacturer, C&A Tool is known for creating high-precision, high-tech parts that service not only Indiana’s booming medical device industry but also the global aerospace and industrial markets. C&A Tool founder Dick Conrow started the company in his garage in 1969. Now, the company employs roughly 650 people and encompasses more than 750,000 total square feet of manufacturing space. From 3D printing to laser technology, their recent acquisition by the Japanese company, MinebeaMitsumi Inc., is expected to further bolster Northeast Indiana and Whitley County’s high-tech manufacturing presence.
Companies like Brightmark are making it their mission to build a more sustainable type of manufacturing. Their plastics renewal facility in Ashley is one of the first of its kind to recycle materials and turn them into usable commercial-scale items. Their recycled plastic produces anywhere from 39- 139 percent less greenhouse gases than those made with new materials. The Ashley facility will divert 100,000 tons of plastic waste each year from landfills and incinerators and is expected to offset 6M metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and brings a $138.3M investment in Steuben County.
