Employment and Wages
Our list of major employers spans our 11-county region with target industries including defense and high-tech communications, food processing, insurance, logistics, medical devices, and vehicle manufacturing. Some of our top industry leaders include BAE Systems, Maple Leaf Farms, Lincoln Financial, General Motors, and Zimmer Biomet.
Wages in Northeast Indiana are a common incentive for our businesses. We work to attract and retain our businesses and their employees with competitive wages. Northeast Indiana is also recognized as a friendly place for new businesses that do not wish to be represented by a union. In 2012, Indiana became the first state in over a decade to pass right-to-work laws.
The region’s growing economy demands a workforce with a wide range of skills. By working with businesses and community partners, we are committed to the development and expansion of talent pipelines that will keep Northeast Indiana companies and workers competitive in the 21st-century global marketplace. By partnering with regional workforce development organizations like Northeast Indiana Works and WorkOne Northeast career centers, we are investing in our region’s talent.
Northeast Indiana Works, which oversees 11 WorkOne Northeast career centers in northeast Indiana, provides Skill-Link training at little cost to employers. Skill-Link is a program that offers certification-based training tailored to employers’ specific skill needs. Employers select high-potential employees for the training, which promotes talent retention, career-pathway development, and, in many cases, leads to promotions and pay increases. WorkOne Northeast assists employers in filling positions left open by the promotion of employees who complete Skill-Link training.
Northeast Indiana has a developed pipeline of talent and our talent is ready to work for your business. Our investment in our students is a benefit to doing business in Northeast Indiana. We know that increasing educational attainment and credentials will increase overall economic wealth and meet the needs of your growing business. Businesses in Northeast Indiana have access to one of the largest concentration of New Tech schools and more than a dozen colleges and universities located in the region. Almost two-thirds of the 6,569 associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees awarded in 2014 by universities in the Fort Wayne region were in business, engineering, computers, math, and health. We are also working on increasing the number of residents in Fort Wayne and the surrounding area with a high quality degree or credential to 60 percent by 2030.
21st Century Talent Region Designation
Northeast Indiana is officially designated as the inaugural 21st Century Talent Region by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb.
In 2019, Gov. Holcomb, together with Indiana Secretary of Career Connections and Talent Blair Milo and Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) President Elaine Bedel, presented the region with its official 21st Century Talent Region designation.
In partnership with the Office of Career Connections and Talent, IEDC and with technical assistance from CivicLab, the 21st Century Talent Region initiative encourages local governments, businesses, educational institutions, nonprofits, and economic and workforce partners to create and implement a plan to increase educational attainment, raise household income and grow the population in a region.
By taking a comprehensive, systems approach, a participating region will identify strategic priorities and projects aimed at helping its communities create a better quality of place, develop and skill up its workforce, and connect talented Hoosiers with businesses seeking to fill high-demand, high-wage jobs.
