KENDALLVILLE — A tax abatement on $1 million in new equipment for Courier Kendallville Inc. received approval from the Kendallville Common Council Tuesday night.

Taxes will be phased in over 10 years on equipment for the Courier Digital Solutions site.

In its application for the tax relief, Courier said the equipment will expand its production capacity. It will not create new jobs, but it will help retain the company’s 682 employees, the application says. Installing the equipment will create work for contractors.

“Thank you, Courier, once again,” Councilman Regan Ford said during the council meeting. He described Courier as an outstanding company with state-of-the-art technology.

In September 2013, the council granted Courier Kendallville 10 years of 100 percent tax abatement on $16 million in new equipment. Courier installed a second color inkjet web press and digital printing and binding equipment that created 40 new jobs.

“The fact that they are continuing to invest in our community — it’s just a wonderful thing, especially with the economic times,” Ford said.
