ANGOLA — Tax abatement to help a rural Angola company grow was granted by the Steuben County Council on Tuesday.

D.A.S. Services Inc. received a six-year abatement for its $160,000 building expansion and $130,000 investment in new computer numerical control equipment.

D.A.S. Services specializes in the repair and manufacture of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. The 21-year-old company was founded by Dave and Barb Short and Kevin Bussard.

“We are a true start-up company,” Barb Short said. “We’re in kind of a rapid stage of growth right now.”

The company plans on adding at least two employees with its expansion, said David Koenig, executive director of the Steuben County Economic Development Corp. Short said that number could grow with anticipated expansion.

Koenig said the company pays about 34 percent above the average wage in Steuben County. The average pay for D.A.S. is $41,176 while the county’s average wage in 2013 was $30,818.

Work on the project is expected to be complete in February. It will be the company’s third expansion. D.A.S. Services currently employs 17 people.

“I can tell you, when we built the first section, we never thought we would be building a second. and nowwe’re looking at a third,” Short said.

“Very impressive operation,” Koenig said.

The expansion is to serve an exclusive strategic partner and the expansion of the company’s hydraulic press repair business.

“We’re talking about potentially doubling the size of this part of our business from where it is today,” Short said.

“We have always been a repair service for cylinders, presses and other equipment,” said Dave Short. “This relationship gives us an opportunity to begin manufacturing a product line that is distributed through a very extensive network. This could easily lead to more growth in the future.”

Barb Short said the tax abatement will be very helpful in the company’s growth plans.

“D.A.S. has been a good corporate citizen in the community. We’re glad they’re here and hope they continue to grow in Steuben County,” said Rick Shipe, president of the Steuben County Council.

The company is located off of C.R. 175W, near the Steuben County 4-H Fairgrounds.
