The Fort Wayne Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved an engineering design contract for upcoming improvements to Goshen Avenue between Cambridge and State boulevards.

The $497,960 contract is for design services on a project that city officials say will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The project includes adding a center turn lane between Sherman and Cambridge boulevards, sidewalks on both sides of Goshen Avenue and handicapped-accessible ramps. The project also calls for new landscaping, ornamental lighting and drainage improvements.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes is a roundabout for the intersection of Goshen Avenue, Sherman Boulevard and Lillian Avenue. The change should improve traffic flow issues in the area, Public Works spokesman Frank Suarez said. The roundabout was announced by Mayor Tom Henry in his State of the City address earlier in the year.

The project is the first of three phases, which could take up to seven years to complete, Suarez said. The total cost of the construction project won’t be known until the design work is complete. Those plans are expected to be finished in 2017.

Goshen Avenue becomes Goshen Road west of Harris Road and carries close to 16,000 vehicles per day.
