A local ice cream maker is adding a second scoop to its factory expansion project.

Edy’s Grand Ice Cream in June unveiled plans to invest up to $1.5 million in a 2,500-square-foot expansion at 3426 N. Wells St. Since then, the price tag has grown to $2.2 million, a spokeswoman said this week.

The building addition now will be between 2,500 and 4,000 square feet. The project also includes about $1.8 million in a building expansion and $400,000 in server room upgrades to support new computer software.

The plans, as originally announced, include new visitor and employee entrances, a renovated cafeteria, men’s and women’s locker rooms, two meeting rooms, an office, cubicle areas and a new uniform storage area.

The investment is on top of about $28 million in normal equipment and building upgrades the company expects to make over the next five years, a spokeswoman said in June. Edy’s parent company is Nestle Dreyers Ice Cream Co.
