FAFSA Completion Competition Results
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s Big Goal Collaborative and NIPSCO have released the results of the regional FAFSA Completion Competition for regional high schools.
The three winning high schools will each be given a $1,500 scholarship to award to a graduating senior. There are three categories to win:
- Greatest overall growth – the school that experiences the highest growth in FAFSA submissions over the previous year.
- Growth of 5 percent or more – all schools that experience 5 percent or more growth over the previous year will be entered in a drawing for the scholarship.
- Highest completion rate - the school with the highest FAFSA completion rate.
Churubusco Jr. Sr. High School had the greatest overall growth, with an increase of 17 percent compared to last year, which brought them up from a FAFSA submission rate of 45 percent to 62 percent. Garrett High School was selected from a pool of schools that achieved a growth of 5 percent or more. Bishop Luers High School was recognized for having the greatest percentage of students submitting the FAFSA with more than 70 percent of seniors submitting the application.
The goal of the competition is to increase the amount of high school students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Filling out the FAFSA, a government form that streamlines the college financial aid process, is a must to qualify for assistance and reduce student loan burden.
“At NIPSCO, were committed to education and we understand to reach the Big Goal we have to do more. Increasing educational attainment has the potential to increase wages, raise overall economic wealth, meet the needs of existing businesses and create more jobs. With the success of the FAFSA Completion Competition, we are turning this educational challenge into an opportunity for growth and progress,” said Dana Berkes, public affairs manager at NIPSCO.
The Big Goal is one of seven priorities identified by Vision 2020. It aims to increase the percentage of Northeast Indiana residents with high-quality degrees or credentials to 60 percent by 2025.
“Northeast Indiana must have an educated workforce with the skills needed by our employers. Thanks to programs like the FAFSA Completion Competition, we are increasing educational attainment in our region, working to meet employer’s needs and setting our students up for success,” said Jim Folland, principal at Churubusco Junior Senior High School.
