Hoosiers' pay falling further behind

If Indiana’s economy is an issue in the upcoming Statehouse elections, incumbents might have to explain why Hoosier incomes continue to lose ground.

Analysis by the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University finds that per-capita income still lags national averages, with Indiana falling from 37th in the U.S. in 2004 to 39th for 2014 income. In 1994, the state ranked 28th.

Hoosiers’ per-capita income for 2014 was $39,578, or about 86 percent of the national average. The 10-year percentage growth figures – which measure improvement over a decade – find Indiana ranked 42nd. For growth over the past 20 years, the state is even nearer the bottom, at 47th.
