I&M plan to help habitat, Rivergreenway

Dave Gong | The Journal Gazette

Indiana Michigan Power is partnering with the Wildlife Habitat Council and the city of Fort Wayne to make improvements along the Rivergreenway as part of the Powering Up Central project.

The Powering Up Central project is designed to enhance service reliability and support future economic development in Fort Wayne. It will rebuild a transmission line that runs from the substation on Spy Run Avenue near State Boulevard to the Robison Park substation off North Clinton Street near Interstate 69.

As part of the project, tree clearing along the Rivergreenway will begin next week. Once construction is complete, vegetation management will help make the river more visible and reduce the need for future maintenance. Other improvements along the Rivergreenway include a possible bicycle repair station, benches, educational signage, tree planting, removal of invasive species and support for pollinators and birds.

“We are committed to being responsible stewards of our natural resources while making the necessary upgrades to our transmission grid,” Paul Chodak III, president and COO of Indiana Michigan Power, said in a statement.

“Our partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council is an exciting part of our commitment to protect and enhance the natural beauty of Fort Wayne and the many other communities in which we work.”

During various stages of the project, portions of the Rivergreenway might be closed.
