Parkview rated No. 10 in Indiana by magazine

FORT WAYNE – Parkview Health’s two main campuses have landed in 10th place on the 2013-14 list of the best Indiana hospitals, as evaluated by U.S. News & World Report.

The Fort Wayne-based nonprofit was recognized for performance at Parkview Randallia and Parkview Regional Medical Center. Each site generated data used to determine the 24th annual rankings.

Sue Ehinger, president of Parkview Hospital and affiliates, said the latest report can help consumers make treatment decisions. It also serves as a much-deserved pat on the back for staff, she said.

“This distinction is a direct reflection of the nearly 4,600 physicians, nurses and co-workers in Allen County who strive to provide quality care in a safe environment every day,” she said in a written statement.

Every U.S. hospital is reviewed every year for possible inclusion on the list, said Megan Johnson, a spokeswoman with U.S. News.

The rankings are not tied in any way to magazine advertising sold to participants, she said.

Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor, said the list is meant to be used.

“The mission of Best Hospitals is to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face a particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age,” he said in a statement.

Almost 5,000 hospitals nationwide were considered for inclusion in the rankings. Of those, 2,262 met one or more of the four initial screening criteria.

The Top 50 were ranked in each of 16 medical specialties, including heart, lung, kidney, cancer, bone and diabetes treatment.
