Partnership shows off region’s food makers

Journalists from seven food-related national trade publications and online news products visited northeast Indiana March 12-13 to tour seven food-manufacturing operations.

The media tour was the third in a series begun in 2011 by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership to garner national exposure for the area’s industries. The other two tours involved advanced-manufacturing and medical-device companies.

Although employment in the food-manufacturing sector nationally has declined 6 percent since 2001, it is up 29 percent in northeast Indiana, according to the partnership.

In the snack-food sector, employment in northeast Indiana is up 61.8 percent since 2001, the partnership said. By comparison, Ohio and Illinois showed 25-percent employment growth in the sector.

“Northeast Indiana is a growing hub for the food-processing industry, as can be seen by the intense interest shown by the journalists who toured our region this week,” said NEIRP President and CEO John Sampson. “We are now telling our story on a national level, and we definitely have a story worth telling.”

The trade publications represented during the most recent media tour were: Food Processing; Food Manufacturing; Dairy Foods Magazine; Food Logistics; IndustryWeek; Food Product Design; and FoodNavigator-USA.Com.

The companies visited during the tour were: Bunge North America in Decatur; Kraft Foods Group Inc. in Kendallville; Pretzels Inc. in Bluffton; Red Gold Inc. in Geneva; and CK Products LLC, Edy’s Grand Ice Cream and Ellison Bakery Inc. in Fort Wayne.
