IPFW will soon be no more.

The Purdue Board of Trustees on Friday approved a resolution to change the name of IPFW to Purdue University Fort Wayne (PUFW).

The naming will take effect with the July 1, 2018 realignment of the university, pending the approval of the state's Higher Learning Commission. According to a press release, the campus will be commonly known as "Purdue Fort Wayne."

In its meeting Friday at IPFW, Purdue trustees said the name was selected in part after feedback from an online survey conducted in February. The survey suggested two new names for the school, Purdue University Fort Wayne and Purdue University Northeast.

While the new name will not officially take effect until mid-2018, university officials and employees may use "Purdue University Fort Wayne" during transition and realignment work over the next 15 months.

"While this name is straightforward, it conveys something that is very important to us," said Purdue Board of Trustees Chairman Mike Berghoff, who also served on the IPFW Study Working Group. "We want to be clear that this campus will offer students the quality academic experience that is behind the Purdue name, while, at the same time, stressing our community partnership and commitment to making a positive impact on Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana."

Per prior conversations with IPFW Chancellor Vicky Carwein and Athletic Director Kelley Hartley Hutton, school colors with remain blue and white and the nickname, "Mastodons."

IPFW formed when Purdue University and Indiana University agreed to a cooperatively-managed regional campus in Fort Wayne in 1964. For over 50 years, the two entities have worked in tandem to provide degree opportunities from both Indiana and Purdue.

Under the new realignment process, Purdue will take over full operation of the university and its campus.

"What is important for everyone to remember is this: Purdue Fort Wayne will have the same mission that sustained IPFW for more than 50 years, an unmatched commitment to student success and the community," said IPFW in its press release. "Now, with a clearer focus and as the region's premier comprehensive public higher education institution, we are better positioned to provide a differentiated, unique experience to our students and contribute to the many endeavors in northeast Indiana aligned with our areas of impact."

The Indiana and Purdue boards will vote on final agreements this summer on how governance of the campus will look.
