ACRES preserve gains 84 acres

February 22nd, 2017

The Journal Gazette

An ACRES preserve has expanded in the Cedar Creek Corridor.

Joan Garman donated 84 acres of forest, wetlands and farm ground to ACRES Land Trust in honor of her husband, Terry, and his parents, Ray and Dorothy Garman.

The property, now called the Dorothy and Ray Garman Nature Preserve, is just north of Metea County Park and down the road from the ACRES Orion Woods. It is closed to the public at this time.

The property was purchased by Ray and Dorothy Garman in the 1940s and 1950s, and their son Terry spent his life nurturing and preserving their legacy, a statement from ACRES Land Trust said today.

Terry Garman died in September 2013. He was 71.

Terry Garman used conservation farming methods and sought advice on preserving the property in an area where progress was booming. In December, his wife donated the land to ACRES Land Trust in memory of her late husband and his family.

“The Dorothy and Ray Garman Nature Preserve provides examples of many of the natural systems and working lands that stretch through the Cedar Creek Corridor,” said Jason Kissel, executive director of ACRES.

Cedar Creek is one of only three rivers in the state to be designated an Indiana Scenic River under the 1973 State of Indiana Natural, Scenic and Recreational Rivers Act, the statement said.
