Credit union expansion in Grabill OK'd

Rosa Salter Rodriguez | The Journal Gazette

An expanded credit union office for residents of the Grabill area was approved Thursday by the Allen County Plan Commission.

The plan commission unanimously approved a rezoning and a primary development plan so Financial Partners Federal Credit Union can move across the 13000 block of Witmer Road to a new, 2,520-square-foot building.

Speaking for the applicant, engineer Greg Roberts of Donovan Engineering, Fort Wayne, said the new office, which the credit union would own, would nearly triple the space of the old 912-square-foot branch, which was rented.

The expansion will make for better service, he said.

“When they have a (real estate) closing, they have to do it at the teller’s window. There’s no privacy. They don’t have a conference room,” he said.

Financial Partners is based in Woodburn and has only that office at 22440 Main St. and the Grabill branch.

Roberts said he met with neighbors to address concerns about lighting and location of a drive-thru window, and no one spoke against the plan at the meeting.

The credit union would have its entrance off Country Shoals Road at the west side of the property. About 20 parking spaces are planned, including some with a hitching post for horses and buggies from the area’s Amish community.

The rezoning, from agricultural to commercial, must now be approved by the Allen County commissioners.
