The city of Decatur and Biggs Property Management showed off the construction being done to create an artist living community and co-working space in the city's downtown.
The project will include 16 artists lofts, with four of those reserved for metal sculptors, said Cynthia Snider, director of properties for Biggs before April 4's tours of the lofts at 116 N. 2nd St. The lofts should be completed by fall.
Decatur, which is already home to a yearly sculpture tour, is also the hometown of the late David Smith, whose abstract geometric metal sculptures are in major collections nationwide.
Biggs received tax credits for the project, which will include a co-working space operated by the city of Decatur. Much of the structure will be industrial with exposed brick and ductwork.
