Fort Wayne, IPFW developing trail app

June 22nd, 2017

The city of Fort Wayne is partnering with IPFW to develop a mobile app for users of the city's greenways and trail systems. IPFW says the app will collect data on trail usage and trail conditions, which it says will benefit the entire community.

The app is being developed by Computer Science Senior Capstone Team members at the university and officials with the Fort Wayne Greenways & Trails Department. IPFW says users who create an account with the app would be able to provide information to the city about safety concerns, such as trees that have fallen across a trail after a severe storm.

Users could send photos of the situation, which would be time stamped and have GPS coordinates to better assist trail officials.

"Working with the City of Fort Wayne on this multi-year project allows our students to gain real-world experience in their field of study," said Beomjin Kim, project advisor and professor and chair of computer science at IPFW. "It also allows us to provide a useful tool for members of the community and City officials."

IPFW says the collaboration through the Computer Science Senior Capstone Project will continue through the 2017-2018 academic year.
