Fortune lists Steel Dynamics among most admired companies
Fortune magazine has listed Steel Dynamics Inc. as one of the 2019 World's Most Admired Companies.
Steel Dynamics ranked No. 1 within the metals industry on Fortune’s list.
“We are honored by this recognition,” said Mark D. Millett of Auburn, president and chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics. "Our recognition is testimony to the strong character and determination of our employees. It is their dedication and passion for excellence that propels Steel Dynamics to the highest standard of operational and financial performance. I thank each one, and remind them, that safety is always the top priority.”
According to Fortune, the World's Most Admired Companies annual list is a ranking of the world's most respected and reputable companies. This list is determined by a survey that evaluates corporate reputation based on nine key attributes: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment value, quality of products and or services and global competitiveness. Executives, directors and analysts identify the companies with the strongest reputations within their industries and across industries.
Founded in DeKalb County in the mid-1990s, Steel Dynamics operates its original steel mill southwest of Butler. Local operations also include New Millennium Building Systems in rural Butler and an OmniSource recycling site in Auburn. The company now bases its headquarters in Fort Wayne.
Steel Dynamics ranks as one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, based on estimated annual steelmaking and metals recycling capability, with facilities throughout the United States and in Mexico.
Steel Dynamics makes steel products including hot roll, cold roll and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, specialty steel sections and steel joists and deck. In addition, the company produces liquid pig iron and processes and sells ferrous and nonferrous scrap.
Last week, Steel Dynamics reported it set several company records in 2018, including steel shipments of 10.6 million tons and steel fabrication shipments of 642,000 tons; net sales of $11.8 billion and operating income of $1.7 billion; and net income of $1.3 billion.
