A California technology firm plans to expand its Fort Wayne operation, creating about 20 jobs.

Carlsbad-based Information Technology Inc., which has been operating in part of the former Mutual Security Life Insurance complex at 2980 Coliseum Blvd. since moving there from Engleton Drive in 2013, will invest about $2.5 million in the property and new equipment, according to Fort Wayne real estate agent Fletcher Moppert.

Founded in 1989, the company makes self-service kiosks and other secure identification systems for motor-vehicle agencies in Indiana and nationwide. Since its formation the company has printed more than 300 million motor vehicle agency documents, including 40 million transactions in 2013.

ITI spent about $2.57 million on the Coliseum Boulevard site last year, projected to create about 20 full- and 10 part-time jobs in addition to a work force that then numbered about 40. At the time, the 19,500-square-foot building was mostly vacant and in poor condition. The jobs created at the time had average salaries of about $72,250, and Moppert said the salaries of the new positions would also be "above-average."

After Mutual Security moved out in 1990, much of the 115,000-square-foot complex remained empty until the U.S. Postal Service occupied 20,000 square feet for a remote coding center in 1995. The center closed in 2009, eliminating about 400 full- and part-time jobs.
