Ligonier plant to lay off 69

A Noble County plastics maker is eliminating 69 jobs as it restructures manufacturing operations, according to a filing with the state.

Silgan Plastics Corp. started cutting and moving operations in its Ligonier plant Monday, according to a WARN notice. The changes are scheduled to be completed by Sept. 8.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires companies planning mass firings or layoffs to notify state and local officials at least 60 days before the effective date.

Silgan employed about 400 in its plant at 910 Gerber St., the last that Ligonier Mayor Patty Fisel knew.

The company will continue operations there after some production is moved or reduced. It’s unclear from the filing exactly which operations are affected.
