Steuben roads got $2.4 million summer facelift

December 21st, 2016

Angola -

Steuben County roadwork hit the pavement hard this past summer with 45 projects spread over 74 miles at a $2.4 million price tag.

That was the report Jen Sharkey, Steuben County engineer, gave the Steuben County Commissioners Monday.

That amount is higher than summer 2015’s 62 miles of summer work done at a cost of $1.6 million.

“The county is very aggressive with roads,” said Ron Smith, president of the Steuben County Commissioners.

The largest project tackled was the $346,000 Old U.S. 27 project from Angola to C.R. 800S. It included crack and chip sealing and micro-surfacing.

Sharkey said less road work — 12 miles — is scheduled for next summer.

That will include 7.42 miles and four major projects.

“The appropriated budget is significantly less — $480,000 — than in previous years, resulting in less roadwork miles for the upcoming construction season,” Sharkey said. “Alternative funding sources will be examined and proposed, such as the local option highway user tax.”

Sharkey said those four paving projects next summer will be:

  • C.R. 100E from Angola city limits to C.R. 200N,
  • C.R. 100N from C.R. 200W to Landis Road,
  • C.R. 100N from C.R. 200W to Angola city limits, and
  • C.R. 200W from C.R. 200N to C.R. 275 N.
