Terex Roadbuilding is restarting its new truck assembly line and adding about 30 employees, a local spokesman said Tuesday.

The Fort Wayne operation, at 7727 Freedom Way, will be producing a revamped front discharge concrete mixer for trucks used in the construction industry.

Terex recently signed a “substantial new truck order with a large ready mix concrete producer” operating in several Midwestern states, a news release said.

“This initial order is for 65 trucks built with various axle configurations to meet market requirements, and production starts in the fourth quarter of 2012,” David Rinas, director of sales and marketing for Terex Roadbuilding, said in a statement.

Eric Parent, human resources manager for Terex in Fort Wayne, said Tuesday that Terex has about 40 local employees. Those workers have been producing after-market parts and working to redesign the front discharge mixer.

Five years ago, the local Terex operation – known then as Terex-Advance Mixer – said it laid off 65 employees that summer but still employed nearly 180 at the time.

The company last year shifted its focus to its glider truck program and supporting aging customer fleets while the new mixer truck market remained depressed. Terex Roadbuilding also has U.S. sites in Oklahoma City and in Canton, S.D., and is a group within Westport, Conn.-based Terex Corp., a Fortune 500 company.

About 20 of the estimated 30 full-time jobs being added in Fort Wayne will be in production, including welders and assemblers. The other 10 will be support jobs, such as engineering and health and safety specialists.

The pay scale ranges from $13 to $18 hourly.

“We’d like to have them all in here probably by the end of November. Some of them are more critical than others,” Parent said.
