Work progressing on pavilion at Fort Wayne’s Promenade Park

The steel structure has taken shape at the Fort Wayne Park Foundation Pavilion in the new Promenade Park, which is being constructed along the St. Marys River in downtown Fort Wayne.

The park is the first phase of construction for the city’s downtown riverfront development efforts. It is located on the north and south sides of the St. Marys between the Historic Wells Street Bridge and Harrison Street.

Construction of the park began last fall and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2019. The park will include the pavilion, a band shell, docks on the river, elevated walkway through the trees, children’s playground and more.

Work at the site also has involved preparing the historic Baltes building for relocation to a new site. The building, which had been part of the Cambray Associates complex, has been purchased by the Hall’s Restaurants group and will be turned into a downtown eatery.

The red brick building, which is about 120 years old, now is elevated on a trailer and reportedly could be moved out of the park sometime next week, a parks department official said.
