Press Seal Gasket started out 63 years ago as a company that made pipe gasket seals. They now make all sorts of sealing solutions for the concrete industry, the construction industry, truck door seals, fasteners, tool and die for themselves and railroad and medical applications. Jim Skinner's dad worked for the company and he is now the president and chairman.
Jim Skinner says: It's a family based company and I'm awfully proud of my two sons for being in it with me. we're awfully excited for the future because our family keeps it's nose to the grindstone when it comes to quality and taking care of our customer's needs.
The company employs 175 employees running three shifts at it's west state bouldvard operation. they use lean manufacturing techniques and run a tight ship to keep production levels humming.
Jim Skinner says: You'd find our products in any piece of pipe that is laid along the highway ready to go in the ground. or in any concrete manhole, on the back of any triple crown trailer as the truck door seal or in the surgical room in the orthopedic wing of a hospital where you're getting a knee or ankle replacement.
Who gets hired here?
Jim Skinner says: The best people in the world. my teammates have heart, they're honest, they're enthusiastic, they're adaptable, they're responsible and best of all they're my teammates.
Press Seal is launching an internship program soon that will get high school kids into the building.
Peter Skinner says: To give students an idea what it's like to be working on a manufacturing floor. some kids…college isn't for them. it's just that they don't know what else is out there.
It's hard to find a journeyman who is under the age of 50 and we'd like to change that. a lot of people see it as a fallback plan, some sort of failure. we want to make manufacturing cool again.
And it is cool. Press Seal has a terrific atmosphere, with a workout facility, full kitchen and breakfast service, billiard and shuffleboard tables, and one of the cleanest operations out there.
And the business is growing. another 120 thousand square feet is being added and about 38 new employees will be hired.
